All I Ever Wanted (Afront's Heavenly Bodies Mix) [Oakey/Sutton]

Afront's Heavenly Bodies cut of All I Ever Wanted attracts a galaxy of mixes (Original, Tobi Neumann, Mojo, Vanity Case and others) then gravitates them around an altered Alter Ego Mix to produce a recut sampler of this stellar song. Drink while the sun shines!

"I love the mix of AIEW" (love action)
"Nice remix, Afront!" (Stig)

Being Boiled (Blind Revenge Mix) [Ware/Marsh/Oakey]

Remixed by EMP, a producer who has had extensive experience within the music industry (producing artists including Mel C and Echobeatz). EMP deliver a fantastic mix of Being Boiled, completely updating the song with a new backing track and some pumpingly good drum patterns. EMP's Blind Revenge Mix contains such diverse influences as Donna Summer and Kraftwerk to create a pulsating techno beat. For those interested in the technical aspects of this EMP mix, the following equipment was used:

Apple iBook G4 Laptop 1.2 gHz with: Logic Express 7 Music Software, Vanguard Soft Synth, EXSP Soft Sampler, ES1 Soft Synth.

"Sure is one kicking remix!!!" (mikeb87)
"A great thumpy new version of this classic!" (JET PACKS)

The Black Hit of Space (EMP Spacial Dub) [The Human League]

EMP have given the wonderfully bonkers Travelogue album track The Black Hit of Space a welcome modern twist with frantic 167bpm drum & bass patterns mixed with acidic synth layers.

"nice interpretation - love it!" (stig)
"I like this a lot. Not too sure about the added drum pattern, but I love eveything else about the remix." (Panzermensch)

Circus of Death (Afront's Circuitous BEF Mix) [Marsh/Oakey/Ware]

Roll up, roll up, this 2005 mix of Circus of Death features:

  • Circus of Death (B.E.F./Hot Gossip version), Circus of Death (Album version), Circus of Death (Fast version), Circus of Dr. Lao, Circus of Dr. Boo (Circus Of Dr Lao bootleg), and finally some spooky Skaro atmosphere.
This remix opened the DJ set at the Warm Electro night at the Marquee Club, Leceister Square in November 2005. Here's the complete setlist.

"Track is fantastic - brilliant" (love action)
"A great remix, thanks!" (shagratha)
"It does become very Yazoo(ish) in parts which isn't a bad thing" (cs15)
"This is really good stuff" (Panzermensch)
"Oh, I like this version :) Thank god there's no Arlene on there!" (kraftwerkdave)

Dance Like a Star (Afront Rebeats) [Ware/Marsh/Oakey]

Based on perhaps the League's first true synthpop song, Afront rebeats Dance Like a Star with a 145 BPM psytrance rhythm, as inspired by Infected Mushroom. Definitley one to annoy the neighbours with!

"Just Love this mix Afront!!!!!!" (JET PACKS)

Dance Like a Star (Afront's Linnstrumental) [Ware/Marsh/Oakey]

Afront again rebeats Dance Like a Star, this time using the earlier, slower version as the source. In the spirit of 1981, Linn drum sounds replace the original in a Daring attempt to recreate an alternate world where Marsh and Ware remained in the band for just a little longer. With a nod to the Future, human vocals are replaced by the Cybermen, while Dr. Boo does his best to patch up their differences.

"I like it" (Panzermensch)

Darkness (Afront's 2006 Transuranic Mix) [Wright]

Transient Being Afront kicks off the first of the 2006 THL remixes with this specially commissioned version of Dare's best album track: Darkness. Staying close to the original's pounding bassline, themes of night terrors and things of nightmares lurking within shadows, Afront expands the darkness with an inspired selection of samples and extra beats. Genre fans will recognise dialogue and sound effects from 'The Day The Earth Stood Still' and 'Forbidden Planet' whilst the main narrative is cunningly lifted from ITV's ground breaking sci-fi series 'Sapphire & Steel' which ran from 1979 - 1982.

Afront has taken samples from perhaps the finest of episodes when the time detectives (superbly played by Joanna Lumley & David McCallum) are forced to deal with a parasitic entity known as 'The Darkness' that is feeding from the resentment of soldiers who perished during the two World Wars. Experimental in nature and lacking convention - Afront thinks outside of the box which gives his mixes a unique League MK1 feel to them and we think that this is his best mix yet but just don't listen to it late at night with the lights off...

"What a great mix! I love that song, and hearing David in the background was a perfect stroke" (Ellen at David McCallum Fans Online)
"Its a nice mix that..well done" (Adrian from Kings Have Long Arms)
"This is brilliant :) Absolutely loving it wow!!" (Simon Le Brit)
"Lovin' it lovin' it lovin' it." (cs15)

A Doorway (John Von Ahlen's Voyeuristic Intention Mix) [Dennett/Oakey/Sutton]

John provided the following production notes:

"This remix was done in about four hours, and then final tweaking took about another four hours. It was difficult to get the vocal balance right, given that it wasn't a dry acapella and there was still quite a lot of instrumentation in the background, which really restricts the type of mix you can do (or not!). I started off imagining what Stock/Aitken/Waterman would have done had they produced the Romantic album, as was originally intended. The mix is a bit more clubby than originally intended. I wanted to keep it as simple as possible because too much instrumentation would make it sound cluttered. Once I get my hands on a dry acapella, watch out! Hope you enjoy the mix, and stay tuned for more remixes."

Software: Cubase VST 5.1 + Cubase SX 3.01, Sound Forge, Ozone Mastering, Absynth 3, Moog Minimonsta, Halion 3 Hardware : Korg MS20, Roland SH-101

"These 2 new mixes of A Doorway are fabulous, hope he is going to do some more as this is how the league should be sounding. LOUD and PROUD. Mmmmmmmmmmmmm" - love action

"Really loved Australian producer John Von Ahlen's mix ... sounds great!" - Sarah T

A Doorway(?) (KWD ReVersion) [Dennett/Oakey/Sutton]

After the success of his Crow and a Baby cover, kraftwerkdave re-dubs Romantic?'s second track A Doorway(?) to produce a short but sweet mix with a new beat reminiscent of (naturally) Kraftwerk. KWD's ReVersion has a bouncy summer feel to it; with its playful stereo bongos and sweeps, this mix became an instant fan hit.

"Absolutely fantastic, Dave! love it!!" (Stig)
"Yet another fanmix that puts the official mixes commissioned for the Virgin VBO album to shame. Thumbs up!" (TrooperDanny)
"Simply super!" (robgrillo)

Do or Die (2004 Audacity Mix) [The Human League/Lyrics: Philip Oakey]

A stunning mix of classic Dare track Do or Die from The Audacity. Paying homage to the old extended mixes of the past, this Audacity mix clocks in at 7.30 minutes but never outstays its welcome. With crisp production and awash with catchy hook lines, this mix from 2004 manages to draw the listener in with a myriad added percussion and dub effects.

Dreams of Leaving (Audacity Mix) [The Human League]

The Audacity provide an innovative update of the Travelogue track Dreams of Leaving. With added samples from Love Action and improved percussion to enhance its danceability, this mix is a radical re-working but still retains the anxious foreboding of the original.

Dreams of Leaving (EMP Mix) [The Human League]

EMP's studio notes, July 2007:

"I haven't done a League remix for quite a while, so decided to give one a go. Remember hearing the original of this and being blown away by the complexity and structure of the track - being used to 3 minute pop songs, Dreams of Leaving originally came as quite a shock to the system! Here was a track that had virtually no drums, was split into 3 sections, had a bassline from hell that only appeared in the middle section (and then disappeared!) + featured amazingly paranoid lyrics about the UK workplace. The other thing that struck me was the sheer amount of melodies and ideas in the track, something that puts many current electro-based artists to shame - most of whom are quite happy to make one idea last the duration of a track!"

"This shouldn't work - but it bloody well does. I love it. Sounds really fresh" - cs15

"Well, he's done it again! I have thoroughly enjoyed each and everyone of EMP's previous remixes, and this one is no exception!" - stefanlast

"Excellente! Monsieur EMP, you are really spoiling us" - mikeypblueremix

"This is such a morale enhancing feel good remix track that is definitely a real delight to hear" - Sarah T

Empire State Human (Ex-Rental Mile High Mix) [Marsh/Oakey/Ware]

Ex-Rental's Sean Turner (webmaster at Blind Youth) was commissioned by Virgin Records as part of a project which has seen several Human League hits reinvented by various artists and DJs, including Riton, Fluke, Chamber and Thomas Leer. The Ex-Rental Mile High Mix of Empire State Human is innovative for its clever use of percussion and faithful reproduction suited to ESH's original charm. The mix also includes a brief moment of previously-unheard Oakey vocals from the original recording session!

Sean reveals more: "The remix was commissioned as part of the Very Best Of project. I was given all 24 tracks from the original master tapes, from which I used all the vocals and some of the synth parts. To these, I added new drums and bass (swapping the original 3:4 time signature to a more dancefloor-friendly 4:4 rhythm, which was pretty tricky!), plus some other synth parts. I tried to retain an overall 'early League' feel with this remix, but also tried to make the whole thing sound simultaneously fresh and modern, by incorporating electro and post-punk funk elements which are currently in vogue in many clubs. The vocal snippet right at the end of the remix is headphone 'leakage' from one of the backing vocal tracks, revealing part of Philip's rough guide vocal which was later erased from the master tapes. I also slowed down Philip's "at least" to the original speed, which had been speeded up on the original version... I guessed these little things might be of interest to die-hard fans!"

"I love it!" (Martyn Ware, Heaven 17/ex-Human League)
"TCB's version of 'EmpireStateHuman' - I love it! " (cs15)

Human (EMP Disconnected Remix) [Harris/Lewis]

This new Disconnected Mix of Human is perhaps the finest EMP mix so far. It's smoochy, seductive, haunting and does what all good mixes should do - amplify and expand the original brilliance whilst adding a contemporary twist with added *extra special* bits. Depeche Mode & Goldfrapp fans gather round and swoon over this mix - it is absolutely gorgeous.

"I LOVE the EMP remix of Human: It's truly wonderful!" (Grammy-nominated producer Vinny Vero)
"Absolutely Brilliant" (synthattic)
"Awesome" (TrooperDanny)

I Don't Depend On You (EMP 2005 Radio Edit) [Ware/Oakey/Marsh]

A wonderful 21st century mix of I Don't Depend On You from EMP that both enhances and respects the roots of the original instrumental track Cruel. This is a funky club-classic-in-the-making with first-rate production values.

"I love it!" (Martyn Ware, Heaven 17/ex-Human League)
"Fantastic - I love what they've done to it" (dare1979)
"This EMP mix is brilliant" (love action)
"Pretty cool mix. I like it a lot and have it on heavy rotation" (Panzermensch)

I Love You Too Much (EMP Loved Up Mix) [Burden/Callis/Wright]

An absolute corker of a mix from EMP who have given Hysteria's finest album track I Love You Too Much a pumped up urgency that is hard to resist. All the great bits from the original & superior Martin Rushent version (which first appeared on the Fascination EP) are still present but EMP has gone a bit further adding a new electro bridge leading into the chorus: one of their finest touches yet. From the vocoded loopy intro (Phil repeating the words 'love you' like a cyberman) to the great build up to the first verse, EMP's Loved Up Mix is 7.02 minutes of extended loving. The vocals sound excellent; none of the filtered-to-underwater vox you hear on some mixes, although EMP has deliberately effected about some lines to give the mix that Love and Dancing vibe - brilliant!

"Think this might be the best EMP mix yet..." (Ex-Rental)
"Just heard this mix and yeah probably the best mix yet! Great stuff!" (Sarah T)

My Song/Non-Start (Afront's Dome Mix) [Beevers]

A curious sci-fi blend of some of db's material as featured on the Live at the Dome DVD. Includes an excerpt from db's Amazing Patch Demo. Following in the tradition of League B-side Tom Baker, this mix is one for the Doctor Who and Blake's 7 fans...

"Love how the way u mixed all those together!!!" (JET PACKS)

One Man in My Heart (EMP Stronger Than Faith Remix) [Oakey/Sutton]

Paul Boddy AKA EMP provides some background info about his One Man in My Heart mix:

"The mix was constructed using the “Unplugged” Version from the CD single which allowed me to totally reconstruct all the music/drums without having to EQ the vocals/original too much. Because of the nature of the song, I decided to stick with the same chord progression but present the arrangement/music in a completely different light using different analogue synth sounds + managed to sneak in a crafty pitch-shifted sample from Love Action, which sort of comes out of nowhere but works in a new context. The track isn’t really a remix asuch (as the track wouldn’t really work as a club track), it’s more of an alternative extended EMP version, which might have comfortably sat on the Secrets album – hopefully the Secrets Massive will approve!"

"Yeah nice new EMP mix of 'One Man'" (Sarah T)

Only After Dark (Electroluvs Remix 2004) [M.Ronson/S.Richardson]

Billy Samson from Scottish band Electroluvs produced this sumptious mix of the League's cover of Mick Ronson's (RIP) classic song Only After Dark. This delightfully crisp mix brings the track into the 00's with new drum patterns, analogue leads and backing, while retaining the original vocals and song structure.

Open Your Heart (Afront's Complete) [The Human League/Lyrics: Philip Oakey]

Before Secrets, The Afront dreamed of a future without tears and of a League Unlimited Orchestra 2001. And so he attempted to reconstruct the "missing complete version" of Open Your Heart; cutting, slicing and extending from the various available versions until he had something almost MIDI evil. It may not stand up to too much scrutiny (particularly when weighed against the brilliance of EMP, Audacity, and the like), but it remains to play its part with The Pansentient LEAGUE.

"I can't stop playing it. Very true to the Love and Dancing/12" mix... well worth the download." (Rebound)
"Good isnt it?" (JET PACKS)
"Had this mix for a while, it's excellent. Must admit i thought the version the band played on the last tour was very very similar....maybe they'd heard this mix?" (peter)

Rock and Roll is Dead (Afront's Gauda Prime Mix)
[Adrian Flanagan/Dean Honer]

Hip-deep in heroes, Kings Have Long Arms' Rock and Roll is Dead features Philip Oakey on lead vocals and came out as a single in 2003 on Chrysalis (new mixes due 2007).

The Gauda Prime mix was inspired by series 4 of BBC sci-fi series Blake's 7, released on DVD in 2006. This mix was released as a LIMITED EDITION DOWNLOAD for one week only. When first shown, the final episode of Blake's 7 (Chris Boucher's "Blake") left over 9 million BBC viewers shocked and dying for more on the night of 21st Dec 1981 (when the Human League were at number 1 in the UK singles charts with "Don't You Want Me?").

"Starts off ok... my loyalties lie with doctor who" (Adrian Longarms)

"WOW :D Another great mix !!" (marcelm)

"A fine mix Afront!! 8)" (crowbaby)

"I couldnt get it to download" (cs15, non stop and others)

RIP 2006 Allan Prior (Horizon, Hostage, The Keeper, Volcano, Animals)

Seconds (Audacity Coup D'Etat Extended Remix)
[The Human League/Lyrics: Philip Adrian Wright and Philip Oakey]

Dare classic Seconds is given the Audacity remix treatment. With a running time of over 7 minutes, this is another delightful mix with some clever twists to update the track while not straying too far from the sonic brilliance of the original.

Shameless (Audacity Dance Mix) [Oakey/Sutton]

The Audacity turn their attention to Secrets gem Shameless. Comparable to the Space Kittens treatment of Stay With Me Tonight, Audacity has created an uplifting and essential mix, the perfect track to play on full blast before hitting the pubs and clubs on a Friday night.

"Bring on Shameless audacity mix!" (robgrillo)

Shameless (EMP Shamelessly Euphoric Remix) [Oakey/Sutton]

Mixed with the Homelands in mind, 2001's Shameless has been given an unbelievably uplifting euphoric twist by professional remix outfit EMP. EMP spent a good few weeks producing a new backing track with a few nods to the younger dance audience of Homelands whilst retaining all those analogue bleeps amongst plenty of new electro layers that should please the faithful.

"A stonker: play this one to the kids if they think the Human League are too last-century!" (Afront)

The Things that Dreams are Made of (Human Remains Mix)
[The Human League/Lyrics: Philip Adrian Wright]

The Visitor aka Jon Pleased is the man behind the Human Remains mix of Dare opener The Things That Dreams Are Made Of. Jon is an accomplished and well known UK DJ, signed to the innovative electronic label Wall of Sound (also home to the likes of Royksopp and Les Rythmes Digitals). Jon produced the mix in early 2003 with a view to releasing it commercially. Virgin were approached but the cost of getting the samples cleared proved to be too high; a great shame considering the quality of this mix.

"I like it very much - it made my car go a bit faster a few days ago. Check it out" (Stig)

The Things that Dreams are Made of (Groove Collision Mix)
[The Human League/Lyrics: Philip Adrian Wright]

Manhattan Clique are massive League fans and have produced three HL mixes: 2001's as-yet unreleased mix of Shameless, a Fascination remix for 2003's 'Very Best Of' and now the Groove Collision Remix of The Things That Dreams Are Made Of. Much of the original is retained, but with a slightly faster tempo there's no doubt this is the Groove Collision Mix. The new synthlines and fx mix in perfectly, as do the new drum patterns.

"Excellent - Manhattan Clique are fantastic remixers!" (Stig)

Together in Electric Dreams (EMP Unity Mix)
[Oakey/Moroder]

EMP's hands-in-the-air 2005 summer mix of Electric Dreams retains all of Philip's vocals whilst totally reinventing the backing with a superb intro that is worthy of a mix on its own. EMP describe the 21st anniversary take on this decade defining classic as a mix that is "in full club mix mode", whilst the new backing contains "a big Blue Monday/Funky Town bassline, arpeggiated synth, subtle filtering and fat clubby drums (the intro drums are a bit reminiscent of Do or Die from Dare)".

"Oh I love it !! I want to dance to it NOW" (BlackHairedGirl)
"Great one! Well done! Bring em on!" (msfc)
